Finally, the day arrived when Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar eclipsed West Indian great Brian Lara's record of maximum number of runs in Test match cricket. The Indian cricketing icon, arguably the greatest player ever, surpassed Lara's tally of 11953 runs against his favourite opposition Australia during the first day of the second test between the two teams vying for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on October 17, 2008.
Nobody can stop time. Can we? This was exactly the case with Sachin when he eventualy rewrote the record books on Friday. It was just a matter of time and the inevitable thing could not evade the Master from the feat. When he reached the milestone, fireworks erupted at the PCA stadium in Mohali as if they had been waiting for this man to conquer the record ever since he started batting for India since 1989. Play halted for around 5 minutes at PCA indicating the greatness of the effort by the Little Master. Amazingly, it was Ricky Ponting, the opposing Aussie Captain, first to congratulate Sachin on the occassion. This itself tells the story, how well the Master is respected even by the opponents. It simply was a pleasure watching Tendulkar bat today. He played with authority and his grace, elegance and shot execution has not changed over the past 19 years ever since he made his debut against Pakistan.
Having nothing to prove now, I feel is the Master should relish his batting and enjoy the beautiful game as he has done over the two decades in the coming years. I personally feel that Sachin still has at least two good years to serve. But as every good thing has to come to an end, Tendulkar will have to eventually bow out of the game. His record might be broken in the mean time, but his impact will last forever.
